Penelope

Odysseus has proven himself a quick and clever man, but Penelope also shares these strong characteristics. She debates whether to embrace her husband openly or test him - taking the latter just as Odysseus would in his own distrust of people. In fact, Odysseus didn't come to her openly, but instead as a beggar. While Telemachus condemns his mother for testing his father and calls her cruel, her actions carry the same pretense as Odysseus's. When Penelope does test him by calling to her maids to move the bed, which Odysseus had built into the house himself, even Odysseus flares up and questions her loyalty. One could say that it wasn't just Odysseus's knowledge of their bed that led to Penelope's revelation of his identity, but also his emotional outburst, a glimpse at the inner workings of a man only she would know so well.

  1. I thought after such a long time without her husband that she feared that he may nit be the same man after he returned so that was a reason for testing him. If he hadn't passed the tests he still would be her husband so then what would she do?
